The State of Babies in Texas

Zero to Three, a non-profit organization committed to the healthy development of infants and toddlers, recently released their State Baby Facts, snapshot summaries of where each state is in regard to infant well-being. Texas ranks 44th overall in child well-being. Here are some key facts from their report that help us to understand how diapers can be an important factor in helping families in poverty.

  • "Chronic, unrelenting stress, particularly stress that results from abuse and neglect or deep poverty, can be toxic to the developing brain. Toxic stress can alter brain architecture and leave lasting negative effects in childhood and later in life."
  • 32% of children who are maltreated are under the age of 3.
  • 1 million mothers, infants and children receive WIC for supplemental nutrition but no federal assistance programs provide diapers.
Providing diapers can alleviate stress, improve health, and reduce the likelihood of stress. Closing the diaper gap can strengthen our families and community as a whole. First step: A diaper bank facility!

We met our Amplify Austin Goal and More!

A huge thank you to all the volunteers, supporters and donors. Amplify Austin was great and we met our goal of $2,000. Taking in consideration a couple of late contributions, our grand total for Amplify Austin was $3,140! We even had a new member join The Founder's Circle. The Founder's Circle consists of individuals and organizations who have given $1,000 or more during Austin Diaper Bank's inaugural year. All of these donations are going toward securing a diaper bank facility so even more diapers can be stored and distributed for local babies and senior citizens.

Amplify Austin Starts Tonight at 6 pm!

Austin Diaper Bank's goal for 2014 is to secure its own office/warehouse space so we can continue to expand services for babies, toddlers and the elderly in need. Just like a food bank, a diaper bank needs space to store the goods it distributes. Once we meet that goal, then donations will go to diaper purchases. We buy diapers in bulk from wholesalers so we get a great price per diaper- making the most of every dollar given.

We hope that the community will step up to support a community-wide diaper bank. The 25% poverty level for children (and 18% for the elderly) means we have a lot of diapers to get out there! Austin Diaper Bank needs your help and today is the perfect day. Amplify Austin starts tonight at 6 pm:

Most Don't Want to Talk About It But Adults Need Diapers Too

She is 80 now and used to love getting out to visit her friends and go to church. Three years ago she began having bathroom accidents. Her social security check only covers rent, food, and insurance costs. It can't be stretched to cover adult diapers. Now she sits by the window, watching the world go by. If she could afford adult diapers she'd be able to be a part of the life she loved. She feels isolated and lonely.

Austin Diaper Bank strives to help seniors maintain their independence for as long as possible by providing adult incontinence products. Fixed incomes and the increasing cost of living makes the purchase of these items very difficult. United Way Austin reports that adult and baby diapers are one of the top ten requested items on their assistance hotline.

How does Austin Diaper Bank get these products? Sometimes we are lucky enough to get donations of adult diapers but the reality is that financial contributions help the most. We can purchase wholesale at much better prices than you can get in the grocery stores.  Seniors across Austin will benefit from your thoughtfulness. Support us today.

Thank you to Margaret Collins for contributing to this article.

Telling Their Story of Escaping Violence: Where Our Diapers Go

Austin Diaper Bank strives to help parents and families in a variety of crisis situations. Our community is lucky to have a number of non-profit agencies that work in the prevention of domestic and sexual violence. Austin Diaper Bank provides diapers to SafePlace, SAHELI for Asian Families, and Hope Alliance. These three groups provide assistance to families dealing with domestic violence, sexual assault and trafficking.  There are many programs these groups operate, including shelters, counseling, advocacy, and education.  SafePlace, SAHELI and Hope Alliance are important safety nets in our community. Austin Diaper Bank is proud to help with their diaper need for their babies and toddlers who come to stay at the shelter or seek help through one of their assistance programs.

Here is one story of a mother's journey:

One of our recent shelter clients, Clara, had recently fled from a violent boyfriend who was also the head of the household. Clara's boyfriend would not allow her leave the house or get a job and gave her a very small allowance each week. Clara had a 2 year-old son that stayed with her at all times inside their home. When Clara decided to come into shelter, she left while her boyfriend was at work and only brought her son and 2 duffel bags worth of belongings. While here in shelter, Clara was determined to get a job, get daycare and find more permanent housing. During her 30 day stay she was able to find a job, but couldn't start until she had childcare for her 2 year old. After gathering her proof of employment, proof of child support payments (or lack thereof, the father of her child has not paid her in several months) and a recent vaccination record for her son, she was ready to start work. The daycare gave her a free 2 week scholarship, as well as awarding her financial aid for the rest of her son's daycare stay. The only thing holding her back from putting her son into daycare and being able to start her job, was diapers. Mom had no money, no financial options and thought she was going to have to pull her son from daycare all because she was not able to supply them diapers. When she got back to the shelter she was panicked, but when we told her that we could give her a couple cases to get her started, she was more than relieved. Clara was able to take a couple cases to daycare as well as keep a case for her at home. Clara and her son were able to move-in with Clara's mom, and Clara is enjoying the new freedom of having a job and finding her "purpose" again.

3 Reasons to Amplify Austin With Austin Diaper Bank!

Amplify Austin is quickly approaching! It's March 20 and on that day, the goal is to raise $4 million for local non-profits! We think it's a great idea and here are 3 reasons why we think you should

1. We are an all-volunteer organization. Help us help babies and seniors in the Austin area.

2. Austin needs its own diaper bank facility to meet the huge demand. We are saving every penny for this!

3. Giving diapers is giving love. Diapers allow parents to work and babies to stay happy and healthy.

Your support, in the form of dollars and diapers, allows us to provide diapers to babies and seniors in need. Thank you!
