Zero to Three, a non-profit organization committed to the healthy development of infants and toddlers, recently released their State Baby Facts, snapshot summaries of where each state is in regard to infant well-being. Texas ranks 44th overall in child well-being. Here are some key facts from their report that help us to understand how diapers can be an important factor in helping families in poverty.
- "Chronic, unrelenting stress, particularly stress that results from abuse and neglect or deep poverty, can be toxic to the developing brain. Toxic stress can alter brain architecture and leave lasting negative effects in childhood and later in life."
- 32% of children who are maltreated are under the age of 3.
- 1 million mothers, infants and children receive WIC for supplemental nutrition but no federal assistance programs provide diapers.
