3 Things We Need to Stop Saying About Poverty

Joanne Goldblum, Executive Director of the National Diaper Bank Network, recently wrote a wonderful piece for Huffington Post titled "3 Things We Need to Stop Saying About Poverty."

"One in five American children are growing up in poverty. Problems, as a rule, do not get solved unless we talk about them. I would dearly love to see a national conversation about poverty, and I'd love it to be an intelligent and productive one. Unfortunately, there are a lot of worn-out conversation-enders that tend to come up in discussions about economic hardship. I could live a long and happy life without ever hearing these three again.
1. "People shouldn't have babies if they can't afford them."
I dislike this one for so many reasons." Click for more here.

Diaper Drive Success: Whole Foods Arbor Trails

Thank you to the Austin Diaper Bank volunteers and everyone else who came out Saturday to Whole Foods Arbor Trails to stuff the bus with diapers. Total diapers donated: Over 1200! We did a lot of face painting, played some games and gave out some prizes. We had a blast meeting new friends and raising awareness of diaper need. Thanks again to Whole Foods for inviting us and to Children's Courtyard for letting us borrow the bus.

We love the venue for our Fall Fundraising Event!

Antonelli's Cheese House!

That's right! Our favorite local purveyor of delectable cheeses and meats will be hosting our Fall Fundraiser. The Antonelli's Cheese House is a lovely 100-year old house in Hyde Park on Duval, across from the cheese shop.  The house is perfect for our 30 person event.  We are putting on the finishing touches, aka dessert, and will get releasing the full invite soon.

In the meantime, check out Antonelli's Cheese Shop!

First-Hand Experience In Working with Diaper Need Clients

A staff member at one of Austin Diaper Bank's partner agencies wrote us this testimonial about the diaper need she sees everyday and was kind enough to let us anonymously use her words to document the struggle that many face right here in our own city.

"I wanted to say how thankful I am that someone decided to recognize and take action for the need for diapers in our community. I work at (a local social service agency) and have clients come in on a daily basis struggling for the basics, including diapers. When I worked at the agency, I can't tell you how many times I contemplated throwing some type of "diaper drive", because it was just so awful not having diapers to pass out to clients. What else were they supposed to do, you know? Many of the families were pending TANF and shelter and had no extra money to actually purchase these items. And yes, its all too often that children go unchanged because mom needs the diaper to last longer....or they opt for bigger sizes hoping it will hold more in. Very sad. (The worse part is, so often mothers who are struggling financially and change less often get bad raps for having "smelly kids" or for "being lazy". If the ones judging only knew!"

Doesn't this just break your heart? Austin Diaper Bank exists to improve the lives of these babies, mothers and families. If you'd like to help us, please donate diapers or funds today. Thank you.

Diaper Need and Single Moms

According to the most recent study on diaper need, 30% of mothers report that affording diapers was an issue.  That problem is compounded when you are the sole breadwinner for your family and you make minimum wage or less.  Diaper cost for those living on federal minimum wage is more than 6 percent of gross income.  Not being able to effectively diaper your baby is more than just a health issue.  The emotional and psychological toll on the mother is also key.  The ability to diaper was a greater indicator of mental health than food availability.  Half of our single mothers in the Austin area live in poverty, so we know that many of their children might be in a diaper need situation.  Austin Diaper Bank partners with social service agencies to get diapers to families who are in need.  Diapers improve wellbeing in so many ways.  Won't you help change the lives of a Central Texas family today? Help Us Sustain the Success: Over 1700 Diapers Given in 2 days!

Thanks to recent mentions in the local media and the generous hearts of Austin Diaper Bank supporters, we have been able to distribute 1700 diapers to SafePlace and Settlement Home for Children.  While we are happy for this success, we still cannot meet these agencies' entire diaper need, which is our ultimate goal.  Let's sustain this great start through our third month of operation!  Tell your friends, parents or not, that ADB needs diapers and operating funds to help take care of Austin's baby bums in need.  Learn more here.

Recycle Your Trash AND Help Austin Diaper Bank!

Austin Diaper Bank is working with TerraCycle to turn your diaper, wipes and baby food pouch packaging into cold, hard cash to buy diapers for babies!  Any diaper or wipes packaging will do!  Simply fill an empty diaper package with all your other diaper/pouch packaging and donate at one of our drop-off locations. We ship all the packaging material that would have normally been thrown away and TerraCycle gives us one cent per package.  Every cent adds up for more diapers and also means less plastic going into landfills. Pretty cool!
